No central air? Here's how to still stay cool

Obviously, having central air conditioning will make your home much more comfortable this summer. But if you don't, there are ways to stay comfortable, while saving money in the process. The following tips can help keep you cooler this summer without running the central air.

First, make sure you have good air circulation in the home. The breeze from a ceiling or window fan blowing across your skin is what makes you feel more comfortable, so don't bother running them when no one is in a room. If you want air circulation through an entire home, I would suggest a whole-house attic fan. The downside to these fans is that they are generally very loud.

Having the proper attic insulation, with soffit and ridge vents, is also important to keep the temperature in your attic cooler. Just like wearing a hat, that in turn keeps your home cooler.

Keeping the blinds closed on windows exposed to the sun and using heat-generated appliances like dishwashers, clothes dryers or ovens in the cooler evening hours also are some other ways to keep cool.

"We have customers who had us install window film on a few windows that get the most sun exposure or in rooms where they spend the most time," Golda said. "But once they saw how well it works, they decide to have it done on all their windows."

Golda said 3M's Prestige line of window films runs anywhere from $7 to $10 a square foot installed and has the added advantage of filtering 99 percent of the suns UV rays. Besides staying cooler, that can help avoid the fading of furniture, carpeting and wood flooring.

Even if you have good air circulation and insulation and you block the sun's rays as much as possible, there are still times when you might want to cool one or two rooms in your home. In those instances you can use either a window air conditioner or one of the portable air conditioning units. Window mounted and portable air conditioners are initially inexpensive but they are noisy and most portable air units aren't Energy Star compliant.

It has a fan unit mounted on an inside wall that is connected with small refrigerant lines to an external condenser unit outside.
