Friday Video: MysteryQuest – Jack the Ripper
For years I have had a fascination with Jack the Ripper. As many have, I’ve also tried to unravel this murder mystery.
It would seem that every year a new theory comes out naming the killer. Sometimes a previous suspect and sometimes it’s someone new. One thing I think we can all agree on is that we are no closer to a concrete identification than they were in the 1890s.
The Ripper did his dirty deeds in the Whitechapel district of London in 1888. It was more or less a Ghetto and his victims were typically female prostitutes. He would typically slice the victims throat and then make abdominal incisions and remove internal organs. It was said that he/she possessed surgical precision.
Some may not know that Jack was also identified as “The Whitechapel Murderer” and “Leather Apron”. The actual moniker Jack the Ripper was coined in a letter written by someone claiming to be the killer at large. Although, just like many other theories in this mystery, many believed the letter to be a hoax perpetrated by a journalist to sensationalize the murders even more.
From 1888 until 1891 the case was extensively investigated and that was just enough time for the media of the day to turn Jack the Ripper into a legendary character.
In this edition of History Channel’s MysteryQuest some of the most talked about theories are explored.
I have always heard it either had to be a surgeon or a butcher which makes sense, especially since anatomy info wasn’t freely available at the time. The level of violence in the crimes, though, indicate a man as the most probable killer. Female killers tend more towards passive methods of murder such as poison or smothering. It’s fascinating, but I’m not sure we’ll ever know.
The name “Leather Apron” is pretty cool. (Another association with butchery…)
Mark,
I always credit images especially if they are by unknowns. Often times I get my pictures from Yahoo Images. Typically when you click on the image it will take you to the site it originates on. Unfortunately it came up blank. I also tried to open the site link manually and got nothing.
Needless to say, I was disappointed, being impressed as well (obviously).
Maybe the artist will stop by and recognize it. You never know!
I read a novel some years ago that had Jack the Ripper immigrating to the USA and continuing his mayhem here. It was interesting and I can’t remember the title or author. I do remember that much of the book was based on actual evidence/history of the murders. The modus operandi of the crimes indicate a man commited them, possibly while under the influence of Chinese Lantern Ale.

Another urban legend about Rizal has it that the hero could have been the infamous Jack the Ripper because he was in London at the time the Ripper murders took place. It has also been suggested that there is a connection between their initials “JR” S:
Then there's the other thing about Rizal being one of the Jack the Ripper suspects because he was never caught. When you look at the time that the women were murdered, it was the time when Rizal was in London. And when Rizal left to go to Paris,

The bad reviews posted, particularly the rant by "Unhappy seeker" (the name says it ALL!!!) are blown WAY out of proportion! And NO, Im NOT associated with the dev in any way shape or form. Ive played all of the other Anuman games and being desperate for a new HdO decided to give this one a chance despite the reviews. I liked it. Its not any shorter than any of their other games. Theres a few remember type questions but theyre easy. If you get em wrong, it just extends the game a bit. SO WHAT!?!?!?! Theres one scene where you have to remember where some graffiti is but its actually not so much of a memory thing as it is a search and find type thing.
