Mount San Jacinto wilderness hiker rescued after suffering dehydration
A hiker suffering from dehydration was airlifted to safety from the Mount San Jacinto wilderness, a sheriff’s sergeant said Friday.
Jorge Alfaro, 39, of Corona, began hiking early Thursday morning from the Palm Springs Museum to the Upper Tram Station with Charlotte Lasley, 48, of La Quinta. However, by 7:15 p.m. Alfaro began experiencing dehydration symptoms and the hikers called law enforcement with a cell phone.
“The hiker in distress began suffering from dehydration after approximately 12 hours of hiking around 7,000-foot elevation,” sheriff’s Sgt. James Burton said.
Deputies in a helicopter located the two hikers and flew them down the mountain. Alfaro was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center, while Lasley was in “good health,” Burton said.
“The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department would like to remind hiking enthusiasts that adequate hydration, hiking in groups and communication devices are all essential elements of a safe and successful hiking excursion and remember that extreme temperature changes occur in these mountainous areas,” Burton said.
