Business As Usual: Credit Union continues expansion ... Laser combat at QMall ...

Kenneth Reynolds, the credit union’s president, said staff and board members now will begin evaluating the bids to select a contractor. That process could take up to a few weeks. Once construction begins it should be complete within about six months, Reynolds said. That would see the branch opening sometime around the end of this year or early in 2012. The project will be AOD’s sixth branch, adding to locations in Bynum, Lenlock, at the Anniston Army Depot, on Greenbrier-Dear Road and a new branch and headquarters in Oxford that opened last year. The credit union is in the midst of an upgrade of those facilities that will give them all a similar look and feel inside, Reynolds said. Work on the Greenbrier branch, expected to cost around $1 million, is in the early stages. King opened the first of what are now four Play Place locations in September in Decatur. Besides Oxford, the others are in Madison and Huntsville. Another Huntsville location also is in the works, he said, and he hopes to begin franchising in other markets. The concept is essentially an indoor playground, with inflatable castles, games and an activity area, plus private spaces to rent for birthday parties and other functions. There’s also a quiet area for parents to relay, with free coffee and wireless Internet.

AOD Federal Credit Union gets bids for Jacksonville branch

AOD Federal Credit Union on Friday opened four bids from contractors hoping to build the financial institution’s planned Jacksonville branch.

Kenneth Reynolds, the credit union’s president, stated staff and board members now will start evaluating the bids to choose a contractor. That process could take up to a few weeks. Once construction begins it should be complete within about six months, Reynolds said. That would see the branch opening sometime around the end of this year or early in 2012.

“For us it’s a major commitment, and we believe in this area,” Reynolds said.

The credit union also has acquired property in Alexandria that will eventually become a seventh branch. That project is “about two years down the road,” Reynolds said.

AOD serves almost 30,000 members, a number that has roughly doubled in the last five years, Reynolds said. The credit union has $225.2 million in assets, according to filings with the National Credit Union Administration.

Laser combat zone planned for mall

Visitors to Quintard Mall may soon get a chance to rest their shopping bags for a spell and hunt each other with laser guns.

Jim King, who opened The Party Place in the mall in March, stated that by mid-July he’ll open Battlezone Sports, a laser combat experience that will see teams of combatants firing infrared sensing simulated guns at each other to score points. Both businesses are in the space once occupied by Martin’s Family Clothing.

King stated the Battlezone experience will be something like a live-action version of popular war-simulation video games like “Call of Duty.” The game is powered by the guns, which are manufactured by the Australian company Battlefield Sports and cost between $1,000 and $1,200 each.

There will be referees on hand to make sure players don’t get carried away by the fog of war.
