Positive Impact: Noble County native protecting Morgan County's past

VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR PROFILES

McCONNELSVILLE -- Barbara Weber is a dedicated volunteer who serves as chairwoman of the committee that oversees the Evelyn True Button House, owned by the Morgan County Historical Society.

With all the dedicated volunteer service she gives to an organization that preserves Morgan County history, many might be surprised to know that she isn't a native of Morgan County.

"One of the most impressive things about Barbara is that she is so dedicated to preserving history and telling the stories of the Evelyn True Button House, and she actually grew up in Noble County, attended nursing school at Good Samaritan in Zanesville and lived much of her life in Florida," said Marilyn Mauger, a Morgan County native who serves on the committee which oversees the historical home. "She has done so much for the Button House. And we have life long residents of this community who have never even visited it, let alone work hard to preserve and maintain it."

Weber and her husband, Charles, retired in Morgan County's Union Township on a farm bequeathed to them by relatives of Charles. They live in a vintage log farmhouse built on the farm by ancestors of Charles.

"I got involved in the Morgan County Historical Society, because never having lived here, it was a good way to meet local people and build friendships," Weber said. "I have always loved old houses and antiques, so it was a good combination. When asked to be chairperson of the Button House, I thought that sounded like it would be fun."

The Evelyn True Button House was built in 1836. It was the home of the late Evelyn True Button, who bequeathed the house and family furnishings to the Morgan County Historical Society upon her death. Button was the great-granddaughter of Gen. Robert McConnel, the founder of McConnelsville. Button was born in the house in 1875 and died in the same house after celebrating her 100th birthday there.

During Weber's many years as chairwoman of the historical home, she has done necessary work to keep the house looking attractive for guests. She wall-papered many of the rooms, repainted antique plank floors, repaired broken plaster and whatever needed to be done. She has been careful to maintain the Victorian décor of the house, which Evelyn Button's parents, Dr. and Mrs. Hiram L. True, moved into in 1874.
