Matteson man dies in motorcycle crash

A 37-year-old south suburban man was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a guard rail on Interstate 80 near Country Club Hills, authorities said.

Killed was Vincent Austin, of the 6500 block of Pasture Side Trail in Matteson, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

The accident occurred in the eastbound lanes of I-80 near Cicero Avenue about 5:17 p.m. Saturday, according to Illinois state police.

A motorist driving behind Austin told police that the motorcyclist was riding his 2007 Honda motorcycle in the middle lane when he began veering left and right, said State Police Master Sgt. S. Nowak.

Austin then appeared to lose control of his motorcycle and veered into a guard rail on the right side of the road, resulting in severe injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

A female motorcyclist riding ahead of Austin wasn't injured.

Authorities don't suspect drugs or alcohol in the crash but will await autopsy and toxicology reports, Nowak said. It is unclear if Austin was wearing a helmet or not, police said.

Study: Illinois experiences drop in motorcycle deaths | Personal ...

Motorcycle riders have some good news as the motorcycle season gets under way. The number of motorcycle deaths declined nationally by 2 percent in 2010, compared to the same period in 2009. In Illinois, motorcycle fatalities dropped by 6 percent, from 114 to 107.

The new study, released in April by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), examines statistics in states throughout the country. The GHSA predicts that about half of the states will experience declines in motorcycle accident deaths. Some will have dramatic drops, such as Oregon and Oklahoma, which are down 27 percent and 30 percent, respectively.

Some states experienced increase in motorcycle accident deaths

In Georgia, motorcycle deaths fell by about 13 percent, from 112 to 98. Unfortunately, about half the states are experiencing an increase in motorcycle fatalities. They include Alabama, which jumped 11 percent, from 62 to 69.

The report highlights some troubling trends. While the decrease is good news, the drop in deaths is far less dramatic than a year earlier, which experienced a 16 percent decline from the previous years. Also, motorcycle deaths actually increased in the third quarter by about 3 percent, and motorcycle helmet use has dropped from 67 percent in 2009 to 54 percent in 2010.

The GHSA recommends states focus on motorcycle safety efforts, such as:

Increasing helmet use Reducing driving under the influence (DUI) Reducing speeding Providing operator training for all motorcyclists who need or seek it
