Driving a third of the way around the world
A former Lloydminster resident who went looking for challenge and adventure managed to find it in spades in the form of a six-week, 16,000 kilometre rally across 20 countries, three mountain ranges and five deserts.
Jacob Hardes, a graduate of the Lloydminster Comprehensive High school and now a student living in Ottawa, is part of a team of four entered in the Mongol Rally as they drive from London, England to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia starting next month.
"We're all finishing school and our various programs around the same time and we were talking about doing some sort of trip," said Hardes, 23, adding all four of them went to Carlton University for engineering.
"We looked at this and it seemed like a good of thing to do as any and the added bonus is that it's for charity as well."
Each team entered in the rally must raise at least £1,000, between $1,500 and $1,600 CAD – money that goes to the Christina Noble Children's Foundation and ultimately helps orphaned and abandoned children in Vietnam and Mongolia.
About 400 teams will start their trek at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in London on July 23. Hardes' team, appropriately named Canadian Bacon, aims to arrive in Mongolia in early September, crossing several different types of terrain along the way.
"We'll see everything from mountains to apparently even almost rain forest conditions and desert," said Hardes, adding road surfaces will also change.
"They'll be dirt track and sand, it's not going to be pavement the whole way. All the way across Mongolia will be like driving across northern Saskatchewan I guess."
But participants aren't given a specially prepared vehicle to hit the road. Instead, each team must find and purchase a vehicle with an engine displacement under a certain limit. The entry rules state an engine up to and including just 1.2L of power must suffice to get the team from start to finish.
"The whole idea is to take a really unsuitable car and try and drive it about a third of the way around the world," said Hardes, adding his team bought a slightly bigger vehicle to accommodate four people instead of the usual team of two.
Canadian Bacon selected a 2003 Daihatsu micro-van with a 1.3L engine which they picked up on eBay for £900. As the van's engine is slightly larger than the rules allow, the team was penalized by having a higher fundraising total, but Hardes estimates the van outputs 12 horsepower per person.
