Sony Introduces VAIO S Series Notebook With Optional 15-Hour Battery

There used to be a season for laptop launches. Now, it's just one right after the other. Sony is launching yet another new one this week with the VAIO S Series, a revamped version of a classic that packs a thinner chassis and an optional sheet battery that doubles battery life (up to 15 hours). Select S Series models sport elegant design in burnished brown, jet black or platinum silver with magnesium and aluminum materials, and the 13.3" form factor keeps it mobile enough for those stuck on a coach-class airline seat. The machine measures just 0.95-inches thin, weighs 3.8lbs. and offers a Core i7 processor. There's also Hybrid Graphics, an optional SSD and Intel's Turbo Boost Technology 2.0. You'll also get AMD's Radeon HD 6630 1GB graphics, and there's a 1600x900 widescreen display that makes the most of every inch. Illuminating keyboard keys, a built-in microphone / webcam, and Face-tracking abilities round things out. Unlike many ultraportables, Sony also makes it possible to watch Blu-ray Discs on select movies, and you can send those signals wirelessly via Intel's Wireless Display 2.0. The VAIO S Series will hit the pre-order stage this week with a starting price of $1350, and the optional "sheet battery" will mean an extra $150. But that's the price you pay to stay alive for an entire Hong Kong-Detroit flight!

Each neuron in the network has one or more inputs and produces an output; each input has a weighting factor, which modifies the value entering the neuron. The neuron mathematically manipulates the inputs, and outputs the result. The neural network is simply neurons joined together, with the output from one neuron becoming input to others until the final output is reached. The network learns when examples (with known results) are presented to it; the weighting factors are adjusted on the basis of data - either through human intervention or by a programmed algorithm-to bring the final output closer to the known result. In other words, neural networks "learn" from examples (as children learn to recognise dogs from examples of dogs) and exhibit some capability for generalisation beyond the training data.

SOC estimations for Lithium cells are complicated by the fact that the useable capacity of a cell is not constant but varies significantly with temperature, the charge discharge rates and with the age of the cell and lesser effect with other parameters such as the time between charges (due to the self dischage rate).

Q-Mag? works across several battery chemistries, and the magnetic measuring technique may one day solve the critical need for improved battery monitoring in hybrid and electric vehicles. Research engineers at Cadex will also examine nickel-based batteries; however, the ferrous enclosure of the cylindrical cells may pose limitations. A solid aluminum enclosure on Li-phosphate does not inhibit the magnetic measurement, as the tests at Cadex are showing.

 

Nickel-metal-hydride is considered non-toxic and the only concern is the electrolyte. Although toxic to plants, nickel is not harmful to humans. Lithium-ion is similarly benign — the battery contains little toxic material. Nevertheless, caution is required when working with a damaged battery. When handling a spilled battery, do not touch your mouth, nose and eyes, and wash your hands thoroughly.
