Festival entertains the community

People turned out in force for last Thursday’s nearly 100-unit Rum River Festival parade.

It was the fourth to the last day of the festival and chamber of commerce coordinator Mary Chapman said afterward that much of Princeton was like one big block party late Thursday. People were up and down streets for the two-day citywide garage sale that began that day and then the parade entries and parade attendees arrived to swell the city’s population, she explained. Among the sights in the parade besides Matt the Rat on the back of the rat rod car driven by the character, Chucky, from the 1988 horror flick, “Child’s Play.” But the parade also had many fairer ones, such as royalty from various towns. They included Princeton’s new ambassadors – Miss Princeton Rebecca Morton and her two princesses Katie Doose and Stephanie Aho. The three were crowned at the festival’s June 5 coronation pageant.

Princeton resident Jannelle Prescott got busy on Wednesday morning of the festival to find the festival medallion that won her $100.

During the same evening as the parade the Mille Lacs County Historical Society had its cake, rhubarb bar and ice cream social, in which Mille Lacs County dairy royalty helped serve. The social had a decent turnout, said historical society board president Penny Quast.

Sunny skies graced the festival’s 5K run early Saturday morning and the arts and craft show and kiddie games that day in the Princeton Mall parking lot. The chamber decided to drop the originally advertised live entertainment there. Chapman said it was because craft vendors had reported that live entertainment in the past had drowned out conversation between crafters and customers.

But one of the vendors this year did fill in some of the music gap, said Chapman, who was at the craft show. The vendor was playing some Andean music, which made for a “peaceful” atmosphere, Chapman said.

Having kiddie carnival tickets for only 25 cents like this one did, was appreciated by at least one attendee, said Chapman. She described one mother there “almost in tears” and saying thank you for having carnival tickets she could afford for her three children. The woman had found the tickets unaffordable at other carnivals, Chapman said.

Having the craft show and kiddie event run next to the farmers market was a good arrangement for both, Chapman added.

General Motors has delivered 23 2011 Caprice cop cars to the US. These are Australian built cars built by GM’s Holden brand and shipped to the states. The 23 delivered so far are non pursuit detective models with no word on how many more will be brought over or where they’ll be going. GM did confirm that pursuit models will far out weight the detective models in the very close future.

These aren’t econo box cruisers either. These late model patrol cars come packed with a 6.0L V8 pumping out 355hp and 384 lb-ft. Combined with a 6 speed auto these fully loaded cop cars hit 60mph in less than 6 seconds.  GM will also be offering a V6 version but for patrol cars in pursuit, what cop would want that?
