Vintage clothing meets fashionistas

While the housing and art markets struggle, auctioneer Leonard Joel is expecting great things from Prada, Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior and other luxury labels at their vintage clothing and accessories auction on Sunday.

Following the success of their first vintage clothing and accessories auction in April, Leonard Joel will now hold quarterly sales, with high hopes for the next offering. The April auction was expected to reap $30,000 but $54,000 of dresses, scarves and bags went under the hammer. Sunday's auction includes a Christian Dior cocktail dress from 1958 and 80s dresses from the exclusive Melbourne boutique Le Louvre.

"We can thank shows such as Sex & The City and the opening of designer stores such as Chanel and Prada in shopping centres like Chadstone for educating more people about the importance of these brands," says John D'Agata, who is in charge of Leonard Joel's new designer clothing category. "People's attitudes have also changed. They no longer see wearing vintage pieces as wearing dead people's clothing."

Most of the auction's vendors are still alive, with D'Agata receiving many items from women in their 60s and 70s who are downsizing their wardrobes. "These are women who want to hand beautiful pieces on to the next generation," he says.

"The Christian Dior dress is being sold by the daughter of a woman who used to work at Myer Emporium in Melbourne and treated herself to this beautiful piece. It became her signature dress. People recognised the dress before they recognised her."

The Christian Dior dress has a top estimate of $1500 but the auction's most coveted item is a Birkin bag from Hermes, with a top estimate of $10,000. "With new Birkins there is a waiting list, so some people see this as a way to jump the queue," D'Agata says.

The bag was created in 1981, when actress Jane Birkin was seated on a plane next to the then head of Hermes, Jean-Louis Dumas. While she was loading her straw bag into the overhead compartment, its contents fell into the aisle. A conversation about the ultimate handbag for a woman followed and the Birkin was born. Last month Birkin auctioned the original on eBay, raising pound stg. 101,100 for the British Red Cross.

"We have already had strong interest in the handbag which is in incredible condition," D'Agata says. "Anything with Hermes on it sells."

Fur, which made a strong return to the international runways in February at Fendi, Oscar de la Renta, Prada and Peter Som, has a strong presence in Leonard Joel's preview room. More than 20 fur pieces will go to auction, including a vintage ocelot and mink fur coat by Myer Furriers with a top estimate of $3000. D'Agata hopes to repeat the success of a mint condition leopard coat which fetched $3800, the top price, in April.
