Royal couple's Calgary stops revealed

Royal newlyweds William and Kate will be greeted with white hats when they arrive in Calgary for a whirlwind tour that includes the Stampede parade and the Calgary Zoo's conservatory.

Details of the couple's cross-Canada tour , which starts on June 30, were released Tuesday by the Canadian government.

The best chance most Calgarians will get to see the royal couple will be the Stampede Parade on July 8. The couple will travel the route in reverse by car, arriving at Bow Valley College at 8:50 a.m. to launch the parade from Bow Valley College.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrive from Yellowknife on July 6, but essentially have a day off, and are spending time in an undisclosed location.

On July 7, at 4:30 p.m., the will return to the Calgary Airport, where they will be greeted by provincial and municipal officials and given white Smithbilt hats, a long-standing tradition in Calgary meant to symbolize Western hospitality.

The first stop is the Foothills Medical Centre for a tour of the Ward of the 21st Century, a not-for-profit medical technologies research facility tied to the University of Calgary. During the visit, a plaque marking the royal tour of the city will be unveiled.

"The actual tour will be private," said university president Elizabeth Cannon. "There will be limited opportunity for the public to be able to see them as they enter the building and as they leave, but the tour itself will be private and they will get to interact with some of the people who work in the Ward of the 21st Century."

That evening, the couple will be at the BMO Centre on the Stampede Grounds where they will be welcomed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, watch "traditional Stampede activities," and be greeted by members of the Treaty 7 First Nations.

Prince William is scheduled to make an address. Afterward, Harper will give the couple the "official gift" from the Canadian government.

The couple will go to a hotel, which has not been identified, and rest up before the Stampede Parade on Friday morning.

The itinerary doesn't appear to include any rodeo events.

Animal rights groups have urged the couple to shun the Stampede , equating the rodeo to North America's version of bull fighting. Stampede organizers have argued back that animal safety is top of mind at all times, and pointed to changes to the chuckwagon races and other events, longer breaks for the animals and improved track grooming.
