Register wins award for 'best real estate section'
The award winners were selected by a panel of judges from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio Univeristy. Professor Patrick S. Washburn, a former news reporter and editor, chaired the panel of judges. NAREE said it received a record number of entries from professional journalists across the nation this years. Prizes totaled $8,000 for first-place winners.
SAN ANTONIO — The Orange County Register has won first place for having the nation's best real estate section for a mid-sized daily newspaper in the National Association of Real Estate Editors' 2010 journalism awards competition.
The Register's Sunday Real Estate Section — compiled partly from news stories posted on its five real estate blogs — was picked as the "Best Newspaper Real Estate or Home Section Less than 250,000 Circulation."
It was the first time that the Register entered the NAREE competition. The awards were announced Friday at the organization's annual conference in San Antonio.

For the love of God, it’s tough being “Nino.”
What does this four-letter word mean?
It’s a word that you use, in Spanish, for someone who is your godfather. There was a time, for at least some Latino Catholics, when agreeing to serve as someone’s godfather meant you signed on to become kind of a fall-back dad.
That’s no longer so much the case, but it’s still nice to get remembered with a card or a call or even a Facebook on Christmas, or your birthday, or Father’s Day.
I’m the godfather of six godchildren — ahijados , in Spanish. Some of them are relatives, some of them the children of longtime friends. When I do it right, I follow the example of my Nina, my godmother, who loves me unconditionally.
But some things come up that don’t get covered in baptismal classes.
Let me tell you the story of my search, for example, of a 32B bra for my preteen goddaughter, Julianna.
Simple. This’ll be easy, I thought.
On a Saturday evening before Christmas, my wife and I decided to get a little holiday shopping out of the way. She mentioned the 32B. A quick run to Kohls and we could cross one name off the list.
My wife started looking. I went looking at the athletic gear. After a while, when my wife didn’t show up, I went looking for her.
The search turned out to be a bit of a challenge. not so simple. In the girls section, they had 32As, but no 32Bs. In the women’s section, they had 34Bs, but no 32Bs. And it wasn’t just size we were after. It had to be wireless.
So I went searching along with my wife. Cup after cup. Rack after rack. It didn’t seem plausible that this kid, a slender 12-year-old, could even fill one of these things up.
I asked my wife about it. She reminded me of our goddaughter’s anglo grandmother and aunt. Beautiful women. Great figures. I realized that if I were Julianna’s dad, I’d be nervous.
We scoured Kohls. No luck. We went through the racks at Macy’s. Zip. Finally, I suggested to my wife that we try JC Penney.
I kept wondering if I’d be taken for a pervert, looking through the racks, feeling the undergarments for wires. My wife searched, just as I did.
Finally, I found one. I couldn’t contain my excitement.
“Got one!” I called out, fetching it for my wife.
“Good job!” she said. Encouraged, I went digging again.
“Got another one!” I said. “Should we take it?
