HARLAN, Ky. — When Dominique Van de Straete’s friends in Belgium heard she was going to America, they asked if she planned to visit California, New York or Florida.

But the 28-year-old day-care worker had just one destination in mind: Harlan County, Ky.

The 4,000-mile trip closes a loop in a relationship that has its roots in the grave of a World War II soldier who died more than half a century ago.

For almost two years, Van de Straete has tended the grave of Henry Lee “H.L.” Burkhart, and for more than a year, she has corresponded with H.L.’s great-nephew, Daniel Blevins, letting him and other relatives know, for the first time, where the soldier was buried.

Having heard that story last spring, another Kentuckian invited Van de Straete and her family here — and on Tuesday, she sat next to Blevins as he was presented with an American flag in honor of Burkhart’s sacrifice in a ceremony in front of the old Harlan County Courthouse.

Had a good time in evarts ( black mountain atv park ) . but if i knew what i know now i wouldnt have went down with the mud tires on , would have put the factory tires on . definately rough rocky riding . found a couple good mud holes but for the most part it was just hills & trails . not sure if i liked it enough to drive 3 1/2 hrs again . next is gonna be hatfield trails .
