Attica's Ziegler captures state track title in the pentathlon
CALEDONIA — Emily Ziegler has been collecting track medals for years.
“I love medals,” said the Attica junior, who has built up quite a collection for her accomplishments.
Now she has one that’s even better than the the rest —a state championship medalion.
Ziegler dominated the competition to claim victory in Division II in the girls pentathlon at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Track and Field Championships at Caledonia-Mumford.
“I was very excited. Division II champion is a really nice accomplishment,” said Ziegler, who finished second in the competition a year ago.
Although she finished off the championship on Saturday, Ziegler really won it on Friday with her performance in the first three events.
She set a personal-best of 15.46 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles.
She struggled early in the high jump, needing all three jumps to clear 4-6.
“If I went out I would have been in real trouble. I knew I had to get at least 4-9,” she said. “Luckily I kept on clearing heights.”
She wound up at 4-11 3/4. Although she had jumped higher than that while competing separately in meets in the high jump, this was her best-ever effort in the event during an actual pentathlon competition.
She then had a throw of 27-0 1/2 in the shot put and finished the first day with 1,841 points, well ahead of Paige Biviano of Cazenovia, who was second at 1,713.
Her first event on Saturday was the long jump. She was conservative on her first two jumps and stayed well behind the line hoping not to foul. When she had established a mark around 16-5, she went for it on her third attempt.
Her third jump of 17-5 1/4 was the second-best of any competitor (Division I or II).
That left just the 800. She was ahead of Biviano by some 200 points at that point and ran a smart, safe race. She finished with a time of 2:30.9.
That left her excited, and relieved, as she knew she was finally a state champion.
“I was exhausted,” she said. “I think I just fell over.”
Her total of 3,168 points was 301 points better than Biviano. It also broke her previous school record in the pentathlon. She also holds seven individual events as well.
It was also fifth best in the Federation, giving her another medal.
“It was a great weekend for her,” said her coach, Anthony Ianni. “She kept setting higher standards.”
Batavia High twins Erica and Eric Williams, also juniors, came oh-so-close to winning state titles.
