Her name is Kat, but Kearney fans know she's a Bulldog pitcher

The first batter Kat Barrow faced Monday night in the 11th Annual Mo-Kan All-Star Softball Series at the Shawnee Mission School District Softball Complex greeted her with a triple to the fence in straightaway center field.

But Barrow, a recent graduate of Kearney High School, found her groove from there and led the Missouri All-Stars to a city-ordinance shortened victory in the best-of-three series.

Limiting Kansas to only one run on three more hits, Barrow paced Missouri to a 7-1 win in the opener.

She came on in relief in the second game and suffered the loss in an 11-10 defeat, but she pitched two shutout innings in the third and decisive two-inning game that Missouri won 2-0 because a Shawnee city ordinance required that the complex’s lights had to be turned off at 10 p.m.

Overall, Missouri outscored Kansas 19-12 in 16 innings of play and won for the second time in three seasons, although Kansas still leads the all-time series 7-4.

“Everybody got into a rhythm after a while,” Barrow said. “It’s unique to play with girls who were once your rivals, but we unite and go against Kansas, and it feels pretty good to win two all-star games.”

Each season, Missouri is at something of a disadvantage. Its high school season is in the fall, while Kansas plays spring ball and hits the all-star game in midseason form.

Of course, it’s hard to fathom Platte County graduate Cacy Williams playing any better than she did. Williams rapped out seven singles, scored three runs and drove in three more for Missouri. Kansas pitchers managed to retire her only twice.

“I was just seeing the ball well,” Williams said, and she was thrilled just to do her part. “A lot of us have played together before, but it’s a big time win for us to beat Kansas.”

Barrow’s big-time performance was a big reason for the best-of-three win. She struck out 10, walked only three and limited Kansas to 10 hits in 11 1/3 innings.

“Kat’s confidence and how she composes herself on the mound gives the whole team confidence,” Williams said.

Barrow’s former Kearney teammate Madison Rich went two for four at bat, scored a run and drove in a run in the second inning of the 2-0 victory in the decisive third game.

Oak Park graduate Amber Dreher had three hits, scored two runs and had two RBIs. Park Hill grad Michele Rupard went two for five with a double, a run and two RBIs. Liberty’s Liz Sharp scored a run and former Blue Jays’ teammate Lindsay Gilliland had a single and a sacrifice.
