Asean markets priced attractively: JP Morgan JF Asean Equity Off-shore Fund ...

Investors across the world have a home-country bias when it comes to investing in stocks. This is because they are familiar with companies that do business within the country and at the same time are indifferent to companies operating even in neighbouring countries.

Also, it is difficult to get information on listed companies in other countries. A Chinese investor may not know much about say, a Moser Baer, a company which makes CDs and DVDs, while an Indian investor wouldn't know much about Baidu, the largest Chinese web search engine. Even if the information is available, the investment process is difficult.

With these considerations in mind, mutual funds have launched global schemes which invest in stocks of companies listed in foreign markets. The JP Morgan JF Asean Equity Off-shore Fund is the latest such global scheme to hit the market. The scheme will invest in the existing JF Asean Equity Fund, which invests in stocks listed in Asean countries. Asean includes five core countries (Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines) and five peripheral countries (Vietnam, Brunei, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar).

Complements opportunities in India: The Asean region has many listed companies in sectors which are largely not present in India. Take the case of tourism, a big source of earning for these countries. The biggest investment of JF Asean Equity Fund, the underlying scheme, as on 30 April was a company called Genting, which among other things also runs the Sentosa resort in Singapore. The fund has a 6.9% exposure to the stock.

Tourism is expected to benefit the entire region in the years to come. "In fact, one of the biggest businesses of hotel operators in Thailand is to organise weddings for Indians where nearly 200-300 people turn up as a part of the wedding party," says Adam Matthews, managing director and head of Asia CPM team, JPMorgan Asset Management. Analysts expect Singapore to rival other major Asian tourist attractions with the recent opening of resorts such as Resorts World Sentosa, Marina Bays Sands and Universal Studios.

The fund's second largest holding (4.5%) is Keppel Corp, a leader in offshore rig design, construction and repair, ship repair and conversion, and specialised shipbuilding. The region also has stock plays like CP Foods, which is the world's biggest producer of shrimps.

For example, many of the outgoing links (links to external websites) that are in the Wikipedia online encyclopedia (http://wikipedia.org/) are unsolicited links–people have created entries about certain subjects. To provide others with additional information about that subject Wikipedia entries typically include what they call “external links” at the bottom of certain entries.
