Stevenson No. 57 finishes fifth in New Jersey
Millville, New Jersey - With the heat index well over 100, it was a hot - and difficult - weekend for motorsport Stevenson Jacksonville-based, which still managed to come away with a top-five finish at New Jersey Motorsports Park.
The # 57 Camaro GT.R., led by Robin Liddell and Ronnie Bremer, was fifth in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car while the No. 9 Camaro GS.R. seen his series of two consecutive victories - and six straight top-10 - the end with a 14th place finish in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.
"It was one of the weekends most difficult for the team in a long time," team manager Mike Johnson said in a news release Wednesday. "Usually, we do not race on Sunday , so we were on the track for four days and each day had a heat index over 105.
"Working in the heat all day meant that the crew was exhausted at the end of each day. I applaud all the teams and drivers to survive a very difficult weekend. "
No. 57 lost to a trio of Mazda, which took the top three places.Liddell said he was concerned about the Camaro would not be able to compete with the Mazda.
"The car was difficult to drive on this track with a low grip and rear grip was at a premium," he said. "We just could not put the power down, or perform any speed in the turns, and if we look at the Mazda car from us again. "
Stevenson is 10th in the race GT team championship, while Liddell is No. 15 in the race for the drivers' championship.
Meanwhile, the No.9 car, driven by Matt Bell and John Edwards, is the fifth in the team championship series and can not score enough points to win the title, although a final high Stevenson could land a spot in the top three ranked .
"With one race left in the season GS, I am excited to see how high we can do," said Bell. "It was an incredible season so far with the first victories for GS Camaro next to the name of the team of Stevenson in the record books. I can not wait to see how it ends. "
No.9 saw its chances of winning the race after hitting a tire while exiting the pit stall, leading to a penalty of 30 seconds.
