ECS P67H2-A Review: A visit back to Lucid's Hydra
If you remember back to October 2008, there were distinct murmurs Hydra - including hardware and software solutions to provide multiple GPUs together to act as one. Then, in January 2010, Ryan tested the Hydra chip, with the final result: more development needed. In my hands is the SAT-A P67H2 the last board to include the Hydra solution. Armed with the latest version of Hydra, too, am here to consult the council, to see if it works as a suitable P67 solution, and if Hydra has something to offer.
In terms of self-P67H2 A, there are still some areas that need polishing to improve the end user experience. There are issues of usability of the BIOS, there's a problem serious overclocking in the case of multithreaded over 4.4 GHz, and the Hydra solution is not yet what we want (but you could say that it gets there, perhaps). Out of the box, very few people have problems. But it's when you get to the heart of the product where some peaks occur slightly uncomfortable, which potentially other competitors have worked to get the best product.
Visual inspection
The P67H2-A is a model of ECS Black Series line-up, which means it gets the Black Series treatment - silver, gray and black livery made its way on the circuit board, all locations and connectors, and sink power delivery is like less stylized. The radiator is a copper heat sink design to double that provides ECS provides a reduction of 15-20 º C temperature PWM.
Above, we find a 2x4-pin 12V CPU power connector, and a series of lights indicating how many power phases are used in various CPU loads.Besides this is a 4 pin header CPU fan - one of only three fan headers on the card (a REP on the other side of the DIMM slots, and SYS at the bottom of the board). Having only three fan headers on a high-end card is rather shocking. Beyond the header CPU fan over the DIMM slots are voltage read points for Vcore, DIMM, IMC, PCH and PLL - These require a direct contact rather than easily slot into the connectors, and given my experience in overclocking below, not necessary.
Work down the right side of the board, beyond the four slots for DDR3-2133 memory (OC), is an onboard power and reset buttons.PCH provides the standard two-port SATA 6 Gbps ports and four SATA 3 Gbps, all supporting RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10. It is strange not to find another controller provided on this forum to give more internal SATA ports, as so many others in this price range generally have two SATA 6 Gbps ports provided by a controller. Instead, we have a controller for the 6 Gbps eSATA ports on the rear I / O panel.
