Grant to Fund La Pine Dog Spay-Neuter Effort

BEND, Ore. -- The Bend Spay and Neuter Project announced Wednesday it has received a $34,320 grant from PetSmart Charities® with a goal of spaying and neutering over 50 percent of the dogs living in the La Pine area.

Per capita, La Pine is responsible for four times as many unaltered dogs received by the Humane Society of Central Oregon than any other surrounding areas.

"Our goal is to drastically reduce this number over the course of our two-year program entitled “The La Pine Doggie Roundup,” the spay and neuter organization said in announcing the project Wednesday.

The La Pine Doggie Roundup will offer dog spay or neuter surgeries for any dog living in La Pine for just $20.

Participating veterinarians include the Bend Spay and Neuter Project, LaPaw Animal Hospital, Bend Veterinary Clinic and Mt. Bachelor Veterinary Hospital.

Vouchers can be obtained through the Bend Spay and Neuter Project at 910 SE Wilson, or by calling 541-617-1010. More information can be found on our website at www.bendsnip.org.

“I would love nothing more than to give residents of La Pine low-cost options for altering their animals and ultimately reduce the amount of unwanted animals in our community. I would like to express my complete support for the grant proposed by the Bend Spay and Neuter Project,” said Karen Burns, shelter manager for the Humane Society of Central Oregon

The Bend Spay and Neuter Project is an independent nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that was established in 2005. One of the only local providers of low cost spay and neuter services in this area, Bend Spay and Neuter Project alters four to five thousand cats and dogs from Central Oregon each year.

"Our mission is to help proactively fight the area’s homeless pet overpopulation by preventing unwanted litters before they happen. Bend Spay and Neuter Project offers low or no cost spay and neuter services for feral cats, pet cats and dogs. Check our website at www.bendsnip.org to learn more about our mission and for more information on pricing and additional services offered. "

Established in 1994, PetSmart Charities, Inc. is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that creates and supports programs that save the lives of homeless pets, raise awareness of companion animals welfare issues and promote healthy relationships between people and their pets.

Partnersjo-Advocacy.com | Blog | Portland, Oregon Pets: Low Cost ...

Like Bob Barker always says at the end of The Price is Right, “Remember to spay and neuter your pets.” It’s true, spaying and neutering your dog or cat is a benefit to you, the city, and your pet. It’s an important thing to take care of – but with the economic times being tight, it can sometimes be a difficult bill in a shrinking budget.

Luckily, if you’re a resident of Portland, Oregon – one of the more dog friendly cities in the country – you have several low cost options for spaying or neutering your pets.

Oregon Humane Society – SNAP Program

You have to meet certain income qualifications or be on some type of government assistance – but the Oregon Humane Society offers a coupon that several local veterinary clinics accept that goes towards the cost of spaying or neutering your cat or dog.

To obtain the coupon, you do need to go in person to the Oregon Humane Society’s Northeast shelter. One of the nice things about this coupon is that some clinics will take it, and the coupon from the Oregon Spay and Neuter Fund (next on the list). You can get more information on the website of the Oregon Humane Society.

Oregon Spay/Neuter Fund

The Oregon Spay/Neuter Fund also offers a coupon that is good for a discounted spay/neuter operation at several Portland veterinary clinics. You can use this coupon in conjuction with the coupon from the Snap Program (listed first) at several of the clinics.

The nice thing about this coupon is that there is no income restriction – so anybody can use it. Also, some of the clinics that accept this coupon will also use it for spaying or neutering feral cats that you bring in – so if there is a neighborhood cat that needs to be fixed – you can do it at a low cost with this coupon.
