Report shows UK discards £1bn worth of cod
The Bureau Recommends an investigation that suggests UK fishing crews have chucked out stocks of cod worth about £1bn since 1963 due to the practice of discarding catches which exceed or fall outside quotas.
New research from independent t he New Economics Foundation (NEF) think-tank suggests that the UK has thrown away enough fish to support 711 jobs for 46 years.
The study also estimates that across all EU fleets, stocks of cod worth £2.7bn were discarded in the North Sea, the British Channel and Skagerrak, the strait adjoining Denmark, Sweden and Norway, between 1963 and 2008.
The report feeds the debate over the fisheries practice of throwing overboard a good part of any catch, most of which is dead or dying when put back into the sea.
The results show how more selective fishing, using catch-based quotas could halt this waste and result in more fish, revenues and jobs for all.
Rupert Crilly, the author of the report, said for all the benefits of an EU discard ban it was only part of a wider issue, mainly connected to general overfishing.
‘What we’re arguing is that we need quotas set according to scientific limits. In the end this would be good news for the economy, the people who own the resource, which is everybody, and the fishing industry itself, which completes depends on stocks being at their best.
