Walmart Shutting Down MP3 Store
Walmart on Wednesday confirmed that it will shut down its MP3 service, effective August 29.
"We recently notified our music partners that we've made a business decision to no longer offer MP3 digital tracks as of August 29, 2011," a spokesman said in a statement. "We'll continue to provide support to our customers who previously purchased digital music through Walmart Music Downloads so they may continue to enjoy and manage their existing WMA files."
The spokesman went on to say that the "digital environment is rapidly evolving and we wanted to provide digital content that our customers want right now."
In analyzing the market, "we believe that's Vudu," he said, a Web video service Walmart purchased in February 2010. "We've tripled our customer base since Christmas and continue to receive very strong customer response."
Last month, Walmart announced that that it will sell access to streaming movies on its Web site via Vudu. Visitors can tap into the Vudu library and purchase or view movies directly from walmart.com/vudu.
The store has made no mention of the shutdown on its MP3 store Twitter feed or Facebook page .
