A Livermore Falls woman and her four children crashed through a garage and into a vacant house when the brakes in their minivan failed.
According to Livermore Falls Police , 37-year-old Melanie York and her four children were coming down the steep hill of Spring Street when the minivan’s brakes gave out. Ms. York tried pushed the brake pedal to the floor but the van was not stopping.
The street, which appears to descent at about a 30-degree angle for the last 50 feet of its course before High Street, descends along Spring Street.
This is the terrain through which Ms. York and her children rolled at high speed, bursting through a garage on High Street and finally dropping down an embankment to School Street, where the vehicle ran into a house.
In spite of the trail of damage, no one was seriously injured. The minivan was hauled out of the house. The ride, which started at about 12:19 p.m. and lasted several minutes, left Ms. York and her passengers – a 10-year-old girl, two 3-year-old twin boys and a 2-year-old boy – shaken but only lightly scraped and bruised.
The family was taken home. The back of the damaged garage, owned by Wayne and Pat Knowltons, will need an estimated $40,000 in repairs. The damaged home on School Street was vacant. Fortunately, all those in Ms. York’s minivan were wearing seat belts.
