Chemical firm gets Acronis for XenServer backup
Zeon Chemicals Europe has implemented Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 for XenServer backup in a move that saw it drop incumbent backup app Symantec and cut restore times to four hours with the ability to operate with mixed physical and virtual servers.
Zeon is a developer and supplier of polymers used in applications including plasma TV screens and in mobile phones. The company’s European IT operations are run from its Windows- and Linux-based South Wales data centre, from where its WAN connects to 183 staff and 150 workstations at remote sites in Italy, France, Germany and Spain.
Nigel Trego, ICT manager at Zeon, decided to look at a new backup app when the company set out on a project to virtualise its server estate using Citrix XenServer. “Ideally, we wanted a single solution that would allow the company to back up and recover workstations and servers in a hybrid physical and virtual environment.”
Zeon looked at several solutions, including products from Symantec and PHD Virtual, but Trego believed they lacked the physical-to-virtual capabilities and Citrix integration he was looking for.
Eventually, Trego settled on Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 for XenServer backup. He said, “Its ability to convert data from a physical to a virtual environment and back again is impressive. It also provides key functions such as bare-metal restore and the ability to restore to dissimilar hardware that were not available or so easily manageable elsewhere.”
A full image of each Zeon server is scheduled once a month, and incremental backups of email databases and shared files take place daily. If a critical server goes down, it can be restored in less than four hours. Bare-metal restore enables fast recovery of a failed server without having to first manually load the operating system and applications. Also, the new XenServer backup setup allows restoration of virtual servers to a physical server if needed.
Print firm installs ATA-over-Ethernet
Printing equipment company Duplo International has deployed Coraid EtherDrive ATA-over-Ethernet technology to build shared-storage infrastructure for a Microsoft Hyper-V environment.
Duplo opted for shared storage for the first time to support a server virtualisation project and engaged reseller Axis First for help designing the architecture. Both parties agreed a Fibre Channel-based infrastructure would be too expensive and complex, but Duplo was not prepared to sacrifice performance by deploying iSCSI.
