Dr John Medina and his hearty ideas on raising children

There’s certainly an art to the way this man combines science with being a parent.

EVERYTHING about Dr John Medina is large: large personality, a large voice with an even larger laugh, and even (ahem!) a large belly. One imagines that he must have a pretty large brain as well; he is, after all, a developmental molecular biologist with numerous publications to his name.

The largest thing about Dr Medina, though, is undoubtedly his heart. Within about five minutes of meeting the man, his complete adoration of his wife and two sons is obvious. Blessed with an infectiously fun demeanour, the 55-year-old American author of Brain Rules (a New York Times bestseller) and Brain Rules For Baby seems less like an author promoting his books and much more like a doting dad who simply wants to share his enthusiasm for raising children well.

So how did a “brain scientist” (as he dubs himself for us lay folks), who has written books on topics ranging from Alzheimer’s to AIDS, end up publishing a tome on raising smart and happy babies?

“Because I’m scared out of my mind as I have two kids!” Dr Medina shares with a big laugh during a recent interview in Kuala Lumpur, where the day before he presented a seminar, Brain Rules For Parents & Educators – How To Raise A Smart And Happy Child From 0-5 Years .

“The first book ( Brain Rules ) wasn’t about kids at all, it was about education and business. But one of the things I began to see was that, if you are a teacher, or a business executive, you are profoundly influenced by how you were raised. So I thought, why not go to that point?”

Born in Japan and raised in Germany till the age of 16, thanks to his father who was an air force pilot, Dr Medina knows first-hand the advantages of having involved and caring parents. As his father was constantly away, his mother took on the bulk of the parenting, and she was nothing if not hands-on.

“I had the world’s best mum! She is the best natural teacher I have ever encountered in my whole professional life. I know a fair bit now about information transfer into the brain, and I’m still learning from her!”

The younger of two boys remembers how, when he was interested in dinosaurs as a child, his mother filled their entire house with anything dinosaur-related.

“She cooked dinosaur food, we made dinosaur sounds, we just went nuts! And bless her heart, because she wasn’t interested in dinosaurs, I was! She didn’t even care what the house looked like, as long as the world of ideas was there.

Crocodilians is the scientific name for crocodiles, alligators, gharials and caimans. Collectively they area walking, breathing link to the dinosaurs that roamed the Earth 240 million years ago. And they look even more fierce as long as a pickup truck, and with giant mouths full of razor-sharp teeth.

Loathed for their eating habits and adored for their skins, alligators and crocodiles were hunted almost to extinction. But thanks to some creative conservation efforts the status of crocodilians has improved dramatically. Even though some populations are thriving, others are still at risk. Eight species remain on the endangered list, and some hover on the edge of extinction.

Alligator and Crocodile Rescue profiles the major programs and people around the world who are active in the conservation efforts to help these animals:

Rene Hedegaard founded Denmark's Krokodille Zoo, which breeds and cares for 70 crocs from 19 species Christine Brewton is a member of Louisiana Fur and Alligator Advisory Council, which actually protects wild gators and their habitat Yosapong Temsiripong is a conservationist from Thailand who works to introduce captive-bred Siamese crocodiles into the wild.

Illustrated with 50 color photographs, Alligator and Crocodile Rescue covers the people, the issues and the challenges involved in preserving a future for endangered wildlife.
