For late country-rock legend Gram Parsons, a cult following grows in Cleveland

Gram Parsons is alive and well living in Cleveland Gordon Square neighborhood.

Or at least his music is.

The songs of the late country-rock pioneers have found a new home at the Happy Dog on Detroit Avenue, where a group tribute to Parsons named new soft shoe (after one of his songs) performs the second Thursday of each month. They won a significant following.

The six-piece band is led by local singer-songwriter Kirby Brent.

"If someone does not know who Gram Parsons, take someone's iPhone and Google's" Kirby teased the audience on a recent evening.Between numbers, he stopped to adjust his acoustic guitar in the glow of neon behind the scenes.

The rainy weather did not stop dozens of supporters packing the place cozy. Many seemed not only intimately familiar with Parsons Songbook, but shouted requests, brilliantly sung and applauded each solo. Some couples even danced.

You will not find a more vibrant scene in the mini-city, even if the object of all this affection is long gone.

Parsons died in 1973 from an overdose of morphine and tequila. He was 26.

Yet as the 65th anniversary of his birth (November5, 1946) approaches, its popularity shows no signs of abating.

By merging the timeless twang of country and the youthful energy of rock 'n' roll, this hero worship paved the way for the likes of the Eagles and any number of other so-called "country-rock" artists . Parsons himself preferred the term "cosmic American music" to describe his music.

"Gram wrote great songs," his friend Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones wrote in his memoirs, "Life".

Parsons hung out with the Stones when they recorded their 1972 magnum opus "Exile on Main Street" on Richards villa in France.

"He could write a song that came around the corner and right at the front to the rear, with a slight curve on it," Richards wrote.

"Guys, it might rub hard enough ... But its effect on women was phenomenal. It was no boo-hoo, it was heartstrings. He had a unique influence on this particular channel, the hearts of women. "

At Happy Dog this month, Kirby and his friends performed "Rodeo Sweetheart," the landmark 1968 album by the Byrds, Parsons recorded during short-term group.

The new soft shoe played the album in its entirety, from "You Is not Goin 'Nowhere" to "Nothing has been delivered." They also falls, and a host of others that included "Luxury Liner" "Sin City", "Hot Burrito No. 2" and other favorites Parsons.
