Donnelly saw a need for short-term manufacturers in the market and sought to specialize only in the short term to provide superior service to customers. Manufacturing projects in the short term a period of 48 hours or less.
"Plastic is still a relatively new material," said Ron Kirscht, president of the company. "We are always making new applications."
Today, many parts used to be constructed of metal are now replaced by plastic parts, according Kirscht. Donnelly has a selection of over 600 available for the use of resins.
The company produces about 3,000 documents provided to 25 industrial companies. The finished products cover a wide range of uses, including ATMs and ice, anesthesia equipment and paint sprayers high end.
Other exciting projects under development include machines for security access passes and aerospace technology for aircraft.
Some of the biggest customers include Donnelly Scotsman Ice Systems, Draeger Medical, Diebold, Incorporated and Graco.
Donnelly ship nationally. About 12 percent of their shipments to customers are abroad.
Market developments
In the late 1990s, the climate has changed the manufacturing industry. The number of projects completed long-term manufacturing in the U.S. plunged the applications were completed abroad at lower cost.
"There was a lot of downsizing and the impact in the industry," says Kirscht.
But Donnelly survived and prospered.
"We're scrappers," says Kirscht. "We are tenacious."
In 2008, the company posted record sales for the third consecutive year. While 2009 was a difficult year with a decline of 31 percent of sales, they rebounded with 28 percent gains in 2010 and about 10 percent in 2011 to bring the company closer to 2008 levels.
The team agreed that Donnelly had become easier to compete with foreign manufacturers that the total costs of the supply chain are becoming better understood.
Wages and manufacturing costs are climbing abroad, shipping costs and delays are up, too, while domestic manufacturers are better able to fill orders quickly.
"This is the best place to be," says Kirscht community of Alexandria.
